He probably has hot spots or allergies. There are many reasons why he could be licking himself. I would suggest taking him to the vet to try and figure out the underlying cause. But to stop the licking for now you can buy at most pet stores this product called Bitter Apple and spray it on the areas he is chewing himself. It tastes nasty and it might sting if there are any sores.

I would suggest you take him to the vets. It could be fleas, mites, hot spots, allergies, anxiety and the list goes on.

Have your dog tested for allergies. The most common reason why dogs lick their paws is either allergies or they were just chewing on a bone and the taste of the bone is still on their paws.

You can give your dog benadryl (regular benadryl) 1mg for every pound your dog weighs. If your dog weighs 50 lbs for example then you can give him 50 mg or two pills of benadryl every 6 hours to ease in the itchiness if it is allergies. Only use this as a way to subside until you get to the vet.

Many dogs can be allergic to corn meal, or bi-products that are in lower grade dog food as well.

Hollistic dog food is a good way to limit this as well as Hills Z/D or lamb and rice.

why is he licking himself?
Anxiety? Allergies? Hot spots?
First get to the reason why he is licking himself... the answer might be anything as simple as bitter apple, a diet change, or benadryl... or as complex as anti- anxiety meds, acupuncture, rescue remedy and music, bitter apple, and a plethora of other things. In other words, you need to ask your vet!!

What we had to do is put a cone on our dog and then he couldn't reach the sore & it healed.
