I was hit by a hit and run. but I found the guy...Anyway just in case it doesn't work out between him and I on the repairs, I was wondering how long I had to report the incident if need be?

Why not report it as soon as possible?

It is a typical practice to report it immediately, however if you found the culprit and have worked out an agreement, I would still report him because he obviously has something to hide if he didn't confront you about it at the time of the hit and run. Don't be too nice or he is sure to take advantage of that.

First you have to understand that state law differs every where you go. In Alabama you are supposed to file the report as soon as you find it. That is if you were not in the vechicle at the time. Any time you are in the vechicle you are not supposed to move it until a report is filed.
If you filed the report and then find the person then give the info to the police at any time.

It varies from state to state, but usually as soon as you can, not to exceed 24 hours. Report it now. Remember, if he was willing to drive off after the accident, then he's probably willing to stiff you with the bill. You don't necessarily have to report it to your insurance company - but that's between you and them.

Because, we don't report it as soon as possible, because we're not out to raise our insurance rates and cause problems for people...

Get a deposit and a deadline for the repairs to be paid for.

If he refuses to put a deposit down then report it.
