SINGAPORE: The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) is investigating into the recall of some brands of pet food in North America and Mexico.
Canadian pet food company, Menu Foods, has recalled dog food sold under 46 brands and cat food sold under 37 brands, after it received complaints from pet owners in the US that their dogs and cats were vomiting and suffering kidney failure after eating its products.

Menu Foods says about 10 pets have died.

The recall covers its "cuts and gravy" style food sold from 3 December 2006 to 6 March 2007.

It is sold in cans and pouches, and includes brands such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

The full list of affected brands can be found at the website www.menufoods.com/recall

In Singapore, the AVA says it is aware of the recall and is currently investigating to see if any of the affected pet food has been imported here.

Meantime, it advises members of the public to immediately stop feeding these products to their pets.

Dogs or cats which have consumed the suspect feed and show signs of kidney failure such as loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting should be taken to their veterinarian.

Proctor & Gamble, which owns the Eukanuba and Iams brands, says products bought from authorised dealers in Singapore are safe.

It also says none of the affected Eukanuba or Iams products were exported to Asia.
