Why are you filling out a Form 1099? Answer that question and I'll tell you exactly what to do.

Addendum: I received the following message form the poster:

Subject: 1099 yahoo question

Message: You answered my question with a question. Heres your answer so I can get mine:

I am filling out a 1099 form because I reveived monies from a friend for work that I did for her. There was no employee/employer relationship. Basically just an exchange monies for services. It is a 1099-MISC for a non-employee status.

Thank you. Any help is much appreciated.

My answer:

You do not fill out a Form 1099 since you received the money. The person who paid you the money is responsible for filing a Form 1099 and giving you a copy.

You only fill out a 1099 if you are reporting income you paid to someone else.
If you receive a 1099 form, it depends on what kind of income you are receiving. You can receive a 1099 for dividends, interest, rents, royalties, other income. You can receive a 1099 for non-employee compensation which is earned income and on which you have to pay self employment tax. What kind of 1099 determines where you report in on the income tax return. Tell us what kind of income, whether it is a 1099B, 1099DIV, 1099MISC or whatever else it says, and someone will help you.

If you need to fill out a 1099 form it sort of depends on what type of 1099,, there are several, (at least 14)
You can get instructions at local IRS office or on IRS web site,

A 1099 form is one you get, not one you fill out. If you got a 1099 from somewhere you have to fill out a Schedule C form.
