Yes, you CAN take a handgun on an airplane--but it must go in your checked luggage.
The gun must be unloaded. It must also be inside another hard case, which must be locked.
Ammunition must be stored in a container specifically designed for it. You may use extra magazines to store your ammo, but you must have the magazines secured in a pouch or other holder that covers the exposed ammo.
Finally, you must declare the firearm to the person at the check-in counter. They might inspect the gun, so make sure you have the key or combination handy. They will then put a tag stating the firearm has been declared INSIDE the suitcase. DO NOT allow them to put the tag on the outside, or you will have a much greater chance of having your gun stolen.

Firearms CAN be transfered via commercial airliners, but they cannot be carried on the plane with you. Below is a quote from United Airlines regarding their policy about firearms.
"Federal regulations require that firearms in checked baggage or in their own shipping case be unloaded and declared. Firearms are not allowed in carry-on bags. Firearms in checked baggage must be packed in a locked hard-sided bag or gun case. A maximum of 11 lbs. of small arms ammunition is allowed in checked luggage in the original manufacturer's box or securely packed in a fiber, wood, or metal box to prevent movement of cartridges. "
Other airliners probably have similiar policies. I suggest calling a head to find out exactly what that airliner requires of you when transporting a firearm with them.

If any considered one of those crews on September eleventh were armed, they might nonetheless be alive immediately. THAT being suggested, take notice that the Obama administration has already began courtroom circumstances to end the FFDO software besides the fact that if this is been one hundred% clever. yet yet another piece if idiotic legislature to weaken our defenses. WHY??? " because of the fact *I* gained "

Sure is, no problem. You can take it almost all the way onto the plane, then some real nice people will come and help you. First, they will make you take a nap right there on the floor, you will be given a beautiful set of bracelets, and they will even put them on you so you won't have to. Then, they will let you get up and go for a nice walk. You will be taken into a room that smells just like fresh donuts, there may also be some coffee there. Your gun will be in one of the mens desk until your trial comes up. After that, It's hard to say what will happen, but please enjoy your stay there at Club Fed, where you will be somebodies woman. You will be given a nice airy room with a view through some steel bars. You will make a bunch of new friends there, especially on bath night. Well, have fun, and don't forget to write.

It must be checked in, and you have to declare it.
