Hi. There is a quick way to check your sensors with just a multimeter. Involves a jumper at the computer interface hookup and is really simple. You count the voltage swings (or "check engine" light pulses) and it tells you if they are good or not. A failed oxygen sensor will fail "rich" and mileage will suffer badly. Have yours tested and/or replaced before you sell anything. The 351 is a good engine. Here are the method and codes. http://www.troublecodes.net/Ford/

unfortuneately sometimes the two are related....

First, do you have any mods to the engine.. that can kill it first.

Two do you have overdrive on the transmission of is it just a c-6 (3 speed)?

Three if it's a computerized model, I'd suggest seeing a mechanic shop to see if a sensor has gone bad that can be causing your fuel economy problems as If I remember, that truck has a very low rear end (4.10) for stump pulling but on the other end eats gas because of it...

The chevy will get the gas milage but I think won't have the pulling power if you do a lot of towing for your likes probably.

It's sad but true. Save for a half tun Chevy pick up with the 5.3 liter 323.3 cubic inch motor. Your fuel economy will jump to a conservative 19 - 21 miles per gallon on trips and a low of 15 -16 on trips.

Only thing is if the engine runs fine, make sure the ignition timing is correct, and the vacuum advance on the distributor works

had one myself. great pull but lousy gas. buy a newer ford or a new ford, but remember that your gas will go up and down depending on the load versus staying at 9 regardless of the size of the load, up or down hills, with or without a tail wind.
