I am a light sleeper and have been plagued for years (20+) by bouts of insomnia. These are some of the things that have helped me.
1) Ergonomic pillow
2) Eye Mask / totally dark room
3) Ambient music played on low (Peaceful Music for Sleep (CD#3178) by the Relaxtion Company)
4) NOT eating before bed or taking in anything with caffeine after 6pm
A good bed is crucial too, but my finances aren't ready for The Sleep Number Bed, tho I hope someday!!
Good Luck

Have you ever tried having a nice warm relaxing bath before dinner and a hot cup of coco and relaxing in bed with a book. The warm bath, warm drink and a book all relax you, ever noticed how reading can be very tiering? My mum had the same trouble and she tried these and it really worked!
However dont read anything to serious for eg. dont go read your study material just a nice easy read so that you dont go to bed thinking about it. Try not ot eat too late either (that can have an affect on some people)
hope that helps you! :)

No caffeine after 7pm.
Go to bed and get up at the same time everyday, including weekends.
Use the bedroom for only sleep and sex.
Don't take naps during the day.
Do something relaxing before bed like taking a warm shower (the body will tire itself trying to cool off), reading a book or watching TV.
No exercising 1 hour before bed.

Masturbating helps me fall asleep. I don't know if that goes the same for a girl, but it's my way of relaxing me and putting me at ease!
