1 British Pound = 8.18583 Israeli New Shekel

1 Israeli New Shekel (ILS) = 0.12216 British Pound (GBP)

Interbank rate +/- 0%

This means:
You buy 1 British Pound : 8.18583 Israeli New Shekel
You sell 1 British Pound : 8.16370 Israeli New Shekel
You buy 1 Israeli New Shekel : 0.12216 British Pound
You sell 1 Israeli New Shekel : 0.12249 British Pound

Median price = 8.16370 / 8.18583 (bid/ask)
as you can see the british pound is worth much more then the sheckel.

it is cheaper to eat out in israel then in britian (generally)
no you dont have to have an i.d on you the whole time, just in a few stores when paying by credit card.

I am an American living just across the border from Isreal and have snuck over multiple times with the same results. Here are my words of wisdom based on my own experience:

Be careful, everyone regardless of faith, religion, or origin is out to take advantage of you. Muslims, Jew, Christians, and PA all treat you exactly the same, as someone to drain money from. Be careful where you change your money because even though the rates mentioned by other answers says 8 to 1 you will have to argue to get even close to this. I had one major hotel trade me at 6.5 to 1 and not knowing any better I took it. The cab drivers want way way too much money. Insist they start the meter. From the border to Jerusalem (maybe 30 min.) they wanted $140. Argueing is a way of life here. You want how much? No way offer 25% of their price and agree on 35 or 40%. Meals ARE expensive bt you can eat at the walk-up kiosks and get a fast food item like swarma sandwich or falaffel for cheap and it fills you up. I hated Jerusalem until I figured out the system. To get to the major religious sites you must walk through a gauntlet of shops where the owners are out hawking their wares. They get very aggressive and I found them annoying. They listen to or guess your heritage and speak to you in your native tongue. I bet they speak 7 or 8 languages. Here is my trick. I speak a gobbdigook babble language that sounds like a cross between american indian and chinese. When ever they spoke to me I spoke back in nonsence and they left me alone-probably thought i was crazy or from Poland or something. Anyway it worked. The city itself is very safe with machine gun toating military everywhere and undercover plain clothes secret police (except I could always tell who they were because of the buldge from their radios under their shirts). All the people I met were very nice, expecially the Armenians in their sector of the city. I had one man take me into a private school so I could have a nice view of The Dome that most tourists do not see. Everyone wants your money so keep a money belt under your shirt. Also, keep your eyes open to the people around you. I was almost shot by Israeli military one time when leaving Bethlehem because the person walking behind me was not heeding their command to stop. Instantly their machine guns were pointing straight thru me to get at him. And, they don't care that you are an American. They would have shot me to hit the other guy without thinking twice and they told me that. It's very safe but be careful.
