here's the thing...he's very large but really sweet. one of his favorite things to do is chase my 12 yr old son. He never harms him, only wants to chase him. He seems "proud" when he catches up to him. Our neighbor's dog does the same thing.
does anyone know why it's just my son he wants to play like that with?

He considers your son as his playmate and he is playing with him as he would a litter mate. Nothing wrong with that, it is the highest complement your dog can give your son.
Your son must just be able to let the dogs know he is willing to play with them.
Your son sounds like a special little guy!

It's a game that puppies play when they are young. It satisfies their prey drive. Your son obviously has a good rapport with the dog and he knows your son will always be there to play. Chances are he's also very protective of your son.

He likes to play with your son. He sees it as a game.

We do the same thing with our dogs. They love to try and find us.

It is probably only your son that plays with the dogs like this as well. Do you guys run so the dogs chase you, too?

I have a feeling probably not. This is how they see your son playing with them, that's all.

Its because your son will play back with him some dogs want to chase things and other dogs want to be chased. I have one of each so they chase each other.

well its very obvius that your dog has taken a liking to your son the same with your neighbers dog when a dog trusts someone it plays with them kinda like a cat and a person the person keeps the cat on a leash till it knows its owner hope this helps you.

because your son plays back, if you run from a dog they will chase you, so if your son stops running away the dog will not have any fun it will stop

because your son asks afriad and it is natural for them to show their domination tell your son to stand up to him and do not run - instead to chase him back and it will stop - for the dog it is a game
