shes in labor and the sac came out, a yellowish one and a dark brown one, but no baby was inside either, but she kept licking them, and they burst..does that mean that the baby is pretty much a gonner?? should i stop her from trying to lick them again if another one comes out, or are they supposed to do that? PLease dont tell me to take her to the vet, i have everything under control, i just want to know if thats normal or not. THANK YOU!!!

Some times there is a few sacks that come out empty. Is she still lying? SOmetimes it can take a couple of hours for the pups to come out. Keep an eye on her and see how she goes. I wouldnt stop her from licking it as its good for them. Also if she does have pups, then thats what helps them produce milk.

If she does seem to be in pain definetly take her tot he vet. I know you said not to say that, but she could be blocked or a pup could be stuck. It happened to us. Just keep a good eye on her and leave her to do her thing, and monitor her.

How great though......pups.

Are you sure you have everything under control or is this your first time for a litter. Yes, they have to free the pup from the sac around it and clean the pup/get it breathing good. I have seen empty sacs before. You need to time when sacs are expelled and keep close eye that she is not going on too long.

Small breeds can run into trouble because of size. I have helped with many deliveries as the rescue gets a lot of dumped pregnant dogs! There can always be a problem and seen some strange situations, especially with the small breeds.

Get off the pc and stay close to assist. If more empty sacs then there could be serious problem. Go ahead and alert your vet or at least call/leave message as this is a Sunday.
She could get distressed if labor taking too long. She is going to check each sac. Watch this closely. If there is a pup and appears to not be breathing then you have to get that pup in a soft towel and start rubbing and clearing its mouth and airway. You actually have to hold it upside down while massaging. Might have to do mouth to mouth. I have.

Make sure you keep all pups warm/dry and near her to nurture. Good luck, hope all goes well.

You don't have everything under control, hon, because you can't control a dogs labor, nor can your dog. Empty sacks happen. Do you know the signs of a problem delivery? it would be the best interest of your dog, the pups and you if you get your vet on the phone. That way your vet will know you have pups on the way and if things look like there may be an issue, he/she will have a heads up that there may be an emergency c-section in the immediate future. trust me they don't mind talking folks through this.

I should also add the breeders I know call their vets at the start of labor and give updates for the reason that if something should go wrong it won't be a surprise if they need to come in for a c-section since they breed dogs that have good sized litters ( lots of hands are needed).

The yellowish one sounds like the water sac that's normal, the dark one should have been a pup and then placenta but if nothing I would be worried. I know you say you have it under control but not only are you risking her life but the life of the pups, I would take her to the vet even if she whelps them vaginaly there. Better be safe then sorry.

Give her a few seconds to get them going...she does this by licking them. If they aren't breathing or moving pick one up at a time and standing up, bend over and swing them upside down ,between your legs. Sounds dumb but DO IT! If they move return them to her. Keep them warm!
If they still aren't moving you can open their mouths and blow VERY VERY gently into thie mouths to get them to breathing.

Is this the placenta you are speaking of? If so she may even eat those. Don't let her eat more than 2 to 3 of them because she will just throw them up. One or two can help substain her through the birthing process. Clean the others up and dispose of them immediately.

Take her to the VET!! Apparently you do NOT have everything under control if you are on here asking questions--WHILE she is in labor!!
