I had to pay additional state tax to CA in 2005 for the amount I owned in 2004. But I forgot to claim it in my 2005 tax return deduction. Can I do it in my 2006 now, or I have to file a correction for 2005? Thanks.

You cannot claim this on your 2006 tax return. You would have to amend your 2005 tax return. You would claim this as an itemized deduction on Schedule A for "state and local taxes paid."

No, you can only deduct what was paid in 2006 on your 2006 taxes. To take the additional 2005 deduction, you must file an amended 2005 return on form 1040X.

Sorry, you can't claim that on your 2006 return unless you acually paid it in 2006. Since you paid it in 2005, you must file an amended return for 2005.

You have to file an amendment to your 2005 return, since that's when you paid the amount, in order to claim it. Depending on the total, it might or might not be worth it.

You would need to amend the 2005 return and you will need to itemize your deductions on Schedule A.

Legally, you may declare back an overpayment for as a lot as 6 years. I recommend that you write a letter for your community tax workplace. I did so those days, I defined how a lot I were taxed in that diverse year and how a lot I ought to were taxed. I received a cheque from HMRC interior 2 months.
