It had to have been hard to accept at first. After all he was only human.

He was going to divorce her is secret.
An angel told him about her appointment.
That changed his viewpoint.
Just like it would any true worshiper of God.

English Standard Version:
Mat 1:19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

In those days, when you were engaged, you might as well have been married on principle. The bible says that he secretly wanted to divorce her. That meant that he didn't really believe her and he didn't want to complete the marriage. However, God sent an angel to talk to him and confirm Mary's story. The fact that Joseph wanted to SECRETLY divorce Mary meant that he still cared for her, had he done it publicly, she would likely have been stoned to death for adultery after the baby was born.

It says in the BIble that he was planning on divorcing her, but quietly, because if he made a big deal about it, she would have been stoned to death for adultery. It wasn't until he was visited by an angel who explained that Mary was carrying the Son of God, that he went ahead and kept her.

The Bible says he wanted to quietly dump her and forget the whole thing.
Of course that was out of the question because it would have resulted in Mary being accused of sex before marriage and that would have put Zachariah (a high priest, he equalled a modern senator in rank) going to judgement for adultery (a capital offence).
Joseph was in a hard place. If he had dumped Mary Zachariah's Zealot faction and the Siccari would have simply killed Joseph, just to shut him up.

yup, hit the thumb down button even when you know it is true.

I'm sure he felt betrayed and disappointed at first. But as a good man, he was not disposed to be vengeful. He was "minded to put her away privily" the Bible says- that is, to send her away in secret to have her child. Under the law, he could have pursued a much harsher punishment. Of course, God would not have chosen a vengeful or evil man to be the earthly guardian of His son.

He wasn't at all happy. It wasn't until after God spoke to him in a dream and told him told him "do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife" that he got over it.

He was shocked and afraid at first. But after the angel of the lord spoke with him, I'm sure he was calm after that.

i think that good ole Joe was the father, and he got her pregant out of wedlock , they got married but quickly found out that the baby would be born well before the 9 months of marrage had passed, so they made up a story to tell the masses to avoid a stoning death.

My guess is he gave Mary a sincere hug, got on his camel & went & had a beer with his buddies and came home half-lit but happy.
