I know you can't eat pork and stuff, but how about chicken and beef? Some of my Muslim friends who are more religious than me say that you can, however my mom refuses to believe this. Is there any proof you can offer?

hey buddy, alright so heres whats up, I'm not that religous either but I eat chicken and beef whether its halal or not, and i dont say bismillah because all in all, its just meat and believe it or not, most non-halal meat the animal is killed in a much more less painful way, just no prayer to it.

Don't stress around food to much enjoy what life offers, if ur doing nothing but having regret for eating and enjoy doing that go ahead

This is one of the food hadiths you can find located online. If the chicken, beef or lamb are known not to have been slautered according to Islamic traditions, then a Muslim saying BISMILLAH (In the Name of God) over it makes it halal for them to eat. Prohibited items (such as pork, alcohol, etc) are not liable for that compensation.

Even if you sat bismillah on pork it will never be halal, but you say it to the other foods

if you live in a non muslim country , you can't control all the food you eat as you don't always eat at home ....i personally just relax...i try to follow the rules at home but just don't bother when i'm outside...i'm a vegetarian which i guess makes it a little easier.
For my other muslim friends it's the same, they don't eat pork but can't bother checking the origin of the meat..you can't restrain yourself only to halal restaurant...i personally like discover new cuisines/new food...it rarely comes halal :)

I think this is what you are looking for. Wikipedia had the answer.

First type of "Bismillah" Halal
Some believe that the guidelines of Dhabiĥa do not necessarily need to be followed[citation needed] and reciting "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" (In the name of God , And God is the greatest) immediately preceding consumption renders the meat permissible. People who adhere to this type of halal generally do not partake in the consumption of forbidden substances. Defenders of this method declare that the Quran does not dictate that God's (see Islamic concept of God) name must be taken prior to slaughtering the animal, it merely says in multiple places:

And eat not of that whereon Allah's name hath not been mentioned..Quran 6:121 [9]
They also narrate a hadith in which Muhammad states "Mention Allah's name on it and eat..." upon being questioned on how to deal with food that is not verifiably dhabiÄ¥a. [10][dubious — see talk page]

Critics of this method claim that the text of the Quran and the hadith needs to be taken in perspective, and accuse defenders of this method of misinterpreting them. [11]
