I'm guessing that you live in either a very small or very old town that was settled by Catholics. Sometimes towns with older populations seem stand-offish, and in a lot of cases, it's because of past history.
Catholics were frequently unwelcome, and when they banded together to form a town, they were usually wary of outsiders. Over the years, they became very insular and passed that feeling down through the generations.
I live in Missouri, and there's a town not far from here that's much like what you're describing. I'm Catholic and I've visited friends in this town often, but I've never been made to feel welcome because I am not from one of the old families.
To give them credit, I don't think they're aware of what they're doing. The problem is more one of history and family attitudes than superiority or arrogance stemming from the Catholic faith.

Its probably the mindset of the people in the town and not the catholic religion
You can be a catholic or any other religion and not be arrogant
People no matter what religion, can be hypocritical, can say one thing and do an other, its more about the type of person you are and not your beliefs.
I was brought up as a catholic, and would still consider myself a catholic, however allot of the stuff the catholic church has done down through the ages I do not agree with

It's sinful to be priggish. Some of the most arrogant people are those that believe that all life entails is building pride and gaining power; however, someone who thinks himself high and mighty might be on the road to hell, even if he goes to church every Sunday. Christians are supposed to not look down on others, and not be self-righteous (but everyone falls short of perfection, so many make this mistake from time to time). The Catholic Church recognises that there are other churches that are Christian (albeit imperfect in the Catholic Church's view).

I am a disavowed Catholic and I have a theory. Belief in only one material existence per soul(no reincarnation). Combined with forgiveness of sin by a living representative of god before death (the priesthood), gives many Christian believers an arrogance similar to that I observe in religions that put every thing off as "part of Gods plan". They all seem to have relieved themselves of personal responsibility for this world we are a part of. This could be a root cause of the greater social disease called progress.

Professing belief in Jesus, while bold, is not inherently arrogant. Sure, devotion to God might make some arrogant - but this occurs all across the spectrum of religions and denominations. Catholics are not the only ones susceptible to arrogance.
In a town made up of mostly Catholics, why are you so surprised to find widespread acceptance of Catholic beliefs?

I think it depends on the Catholic, just like it depends on the baptist and the pentecostal and the methodist. The southern baptists in this town tell everyone if you aren't southern baptist you are going to hell. All religions are this way. I'm Catholic and think that is all a crock. If you read and follow the bible it doesn't matter which organized religion you follow. Just do the right thing always!!!!!!

Free Spirit,
Yes, the Catholic church is the only true church of Christ. Jesus, was Jewish, but he broke off of the Jews and formed the Catholic church, which was the only form of Christianity in the early ADs. In the 1500, Martin Luther, (Not the civil rights leader) branched off of Catholicism forming the Lutheran Church, Followed by Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodist etc. No, Catholics aren't self centered, we of all churchs care for others more than our selves. We take groups to read mass for those in prison or those who are ill in the hospital. But yes, we do believe we are the only true church of Jesus Christ.
Hope I was of help.

There is nothing in Catholic teachings that should lead you to draw that conclusion. However, in situations as you describe where one religion dominates a region, such snootiness could take place. It could apply to Catholics, Baptists, Buddhists (even). But you should not stereotype Catholics as uniquely vulnerable to this one of Man's shortcomings. Candidly, those who are in the minority can draw conclusions that aren't warranted.

hello?? Catholics make up 30% of the people in Canada, and at least 15% in the USA... we love and honour our religion, so its really none of your business if we were arrogant, which we ARE NOT! and we do respect other religions, as a matter of fact, we learned about the different types of Christians in religion class each year, and we discussed Jewism and African-American religion... you are 100% wrong and uneducated about Catholics.
