Usually a written plan tells you the route, how far to the next turn, where the rest stops and feeding stations are.

If your on an organised ride you will find that from time to time you can't see where the person in front of you has gone. (Even at night time). You will need to check then.

More often that not you will be riding in a small group,(socialising) there is usually somebody who knows where to go. So the plan won't come out.

If your on your own you will need to plan stops so you can get water and food as required. If you might haven't got somewhere to stop you will need to carry everything with you.

Hmmm... haven't ever heard of making a written plan for an overnight trek. Are you talking about a camping trip - bike touring? Or a 24 hour endurance bike ride?
