Just ask her to go to the prom.
If some guy asked me to go to the prom, I wouldn't think, "Omg, he defintely wants to go out with me!" And even if I did, I'd think again and be like, "Wait...he just asked me to prom...that's it."

If she's your friend, just be casual. Don't freak her out if your intentions aren't for "more than friends". Just ask her to prom, and maybe add on "as friends", or "just as friends", etc. If she is the type of girl who might get weirded out, pass her a note. (Handwritten! Not a text or on AIM). Make is short, sweet and to the point. Just "Hey Name...I was wondering if you wanted to go to prom with me?"...Good luck! I'm sure you'll have a great time.

well.. you should get to know her.. and if you think that she is interested then ask her as in.. do you have a date to the prom.. and if she says no look at her face and you can usually tell if shes happy that you asked her if someones taking her to the prom but if she has a decusted look on her face dont even bother asking. just say o0ohh well.. i hope someone asks you.

Just ask her if she would like to go to the prom with you. She will either say yes or no.

Ummm, "If you're not going with anyone to the prom...would you like to go with me?" And look like it's the most unplanned thing ever and you're nervous. Be sincere about it. If you're stumbling over words and look like you really want to go to prom with her and she's the kind of girl I would be about it, she might consider it. If she likes you enough though, you have to consider that.

first ask her if she is going to the prom.. if no
say, well i want to go to the prom and i was wondering if you want to go with me ...
and see her reaction.. if it looks happy.. then ok, but other than that.. then hurry and add as mutual friends..

maybe leave a note tapped to some balloons and stick it under the windsheild wipers of her car or something.
you could write it in that waxy stuff on her car windows.
you might make a mini-banner and tape it on her locker at school asking her.
