I just got my taxes done and the accountant who did them told me he couldn't e-file them because I didn't file taxes last year. I didn't file last year since I had my own business and didn't really make any money. Then he kept stressing that if I get a letter from the IRS saying I owe money that we will figure out then what to do. Could he really not do an e-file for me since I didn't file last year? Or is it that he tried to e-file and it is coming up that I owe taxes to the IRS?? Can anyone help me?

NO, PRIOR YEAR DOES NOT EFFECT E FILING IN THE CURRENT YEAR, BUT "didn't really make any money" IS NOT A REASON NOT TO FILE YOUR TAX RETURN FROM THE PRIOR YEAR. IF YOU WERE SELF EMPLOYED AND HAD GROSS RECEIPTS IN EXCESS OF $400, YOU SHOULD FILE YOUR RETURN NO MATTER HOW MANY DEDUCTIONS YOU HAD OR YOUR GROSS INCOME.

Get a new tax person.
How you filed last year has nothing to do with e-filing, your tax person has some other reason but was wrong on that one.
If you was self-employed and made less than $400. you did not have to file. If you made more than $400. in self-employment you would need to file to pay the self-employment tax even if you owed no federal income tax.
Did i mention that you need a new tax person?

The efile program is probably asking for your AGI (adjusted gross income) number from last year's return, and since you didn't file, there isn't one. It's not that anything is saying that you owe for last year - you might, but you might not.
