I'll be getting braces in a couple of months here because I did not have the opportunity as a child (parents could not afford it) I'm now 24. Has anyone gotten them as adults? what should I be prepared for? do they put spacers in first (if so how long does it normally take) or do they just go ahead with the braces? I had my wisdom teeth taken out a few months ago in preparation for this.

Oscar, I like mashed potatoes, lol! I have heard it is rather painful.

I'm not liking the idea of having teeth yanked. my wisdom teeth was enough for me! but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Don't think about all of this stuff. Just think about how beautiful your teeth will look after they r taken out. And ask ur dentist about anything else. I don't have experiance with them but i see what they have done to people's teeth. And the result is good.

I got braces last April 26th and I am 36 years old. I have about 3 more months in them and can not wait to see what my teeth look like without them but it has been well worth it. As far as pain nothing unbearable or that Advil would not take care of. You will get used to it and not even think of it. The only time I feel any discomfort is the day they change the wire and maybe the day after and that is it. Just be careful. No hard candy (I have dislodged bands chewing on Lifesavers), get used to chopping up fruit and eating ribs with a fork or pretty much anything with a fork and not biting in the front for awhile anything hard that is. The more careful you are the fewer trips to the ortho to have repairs, etc. I have no regrets, go for it! I did not have spacers or rubber bands so I do not know about them but one thing, get the clear plastic braces, more comfortable than metal.

Many, many adults (more than you think) get braces nowadays. I'm getting braces in three days. My dentist said I will not have to get spacers because they do not use bands, so if your dentist doesn't use bands, then you probably won't need spacers either.

Stock up on soft foods such as mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, milkshakes, etc. Or cut food into small, manageable units.

You might want to take a few ibuprofen before you get your braces put on, you might be a little uncomfortable for a few days afterwards.

Good luck!

spacers are placed so that they can fit the band around the molar. the spacers are on for about a week or so, then the braces are put on.

Prepare for the worst its very painful. They remove teeth and more teeth. And when the pain is going away, the next appointment comes around and they tighten them some more and the pain comes back... It will be like this for approx 6 months... Do u like your food blended... I hope so...

You will be fine my dear... You will look so Nice...
