My cat is 12 years old and for the last two weeks I have had him to the vets three times. Originally it was for lethargy, vomitting, high temperature and a distended tummy. The vet gave him a shot but he didn't seem to improve so I took him back. His temperature had dropped and he gave him another shot. The vet thought he had been eating something that had gone off. I had him back to the vet the day before yesterday as he seems to stay (mostly asleep) in the same place for hours on end. His temperature was normal, heartbeat normal and the vet couldn't feel anything in his abdomen to worry about. I know my cat and he just isn't himself. We love him very much and I don't want to sit by if he is genuinely poorly. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Thank you so much to all the people who took the trouble to answer. It was my first question and I couldn't believe the amount of responses I received. I am going to take the advice, get my little cat back to the vets and hopefully get him back on his feet (literally) again.

Try asking your vet to do a blood sample and a urine sample to rule out anything such as kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes etc. A high temp, swollen tummy could be number of things. Is he vaccinated, does he come inro regular contact with other cats. You know your cat better than anyone and if you feel he's not right then he isn't.

If you have ruled out the food recall, then I think the problem at that age is most likely urinary tract disease. Is he drinking a lot and always seems to be in the litter box? Take him back to the vet and ask them to do a test on blood creatinine values. This is an indicator that tells us if the kidneys are working, usually creatinine is expelled in the urine but if the kidneys aren't working, it builds up in the blood, becomes toxic and poisons the cat. The stomach will bloat as the urine has nowhere to go and eventually it will build up in the lungs or heart and drown him if this is the problem. He may have a blockage in the urethra and the pee can't escape properly. I believe the food recall is because animals were having kidney problems too, it may or may not be related.

Back to the vet!

My cat had something similar - vomiting, looking miserable, not grooming/staring coat, lethargic, not eating and it turned out to be an obstruction in his intestine. Like your vet, my cat's vet initially thought my cat had a stomach upset from eating stale food. However, his temperature was a bit raised so you should ask your vet to check your cat again. My cat's vet suspected an obstruction when he vomited bile on the examination table in the clinic. Has your cat been x-rayed? Mine was but the obstruction didn't show up so the vet operated to find the foreign body. It turned out to be a piece of thread that got caught on his tongue at the back of his mouth and kept pulling in his intestine. It took two operations to remove the thread from his intestine but he made a full recovery and even the vet couldn't believe it was the same cat when I brought him in for his vaccinations five months afterwards, he looked so much better. I think you should bring him back to the vet's again and get them to check him again.

sounds like it could be kidney failure...is he drinking plenty of fluids? when you pull the skin up on the back of his neck..does it "snap" back quickly or slowly roll back into place...this is simple to see if your cat is dehydrated..if the latter happens get to a vet quickly!..maybe a new vet and explain that you have already seen a vet but have no answers..check the info below for information a to the recalled foods.Hope this helps! God Bless!

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was available from the Menu Foods Web site,

The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information — (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708 — but callers kept the lines busy for much of Saturday.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/Oczqa

A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

Get blood tests done. And as i read below someone said kidney failure... if that was the case your cats urine would be cloudy or have discolouration! Diabetes may be the case and there has been an increase in animals suffering from this and a blood test would let you know.

animals can get bugs just as we can...it could be the weather changing...but as already suggested go back to the vets and ask for further test to be carried out....after all if this was a child you were talking about you be straight back to the doctors...good luck hope all's well soon..
