I'm SOO afraid.. The main thing is that I feel like I get stupid when it comes to driving. I've sat and studied the intersections and I've looked when people are driving and try and test myself what would I do and I usually end up saying ok NOW i would turn ..and then it ends up being the wrong time and for some reason i just cant figure it out .. plus i live in LA where traffic is horrible and pretty much every intersection operates a different way and people drive like **** and you can pretty much only turn left on yellow/ red light. .The last time I tried to drive was in a little suburb and Texas and even then i couldnt drive and would almost crash because i just cant pay attention the right way.. my eyes dont catch everything they need to. .for example ill be concentrating straight ahead for stoplights and ill miss the stoplight right in front of my face OR a car turning or changing lanes

I'm also afraid of accidents and my biggest fear is fire so I get REALLY scared

I understand your fear. I was in an accident when I was 17, and I was afraid to get back behind the wheel for two months after I recovered. Your problem is the same as mine was -- lack of confidence. What you need is to get more practice. The more you hone your skills, the more confident you will be in them and the less you will fear making a mistake.

The cure for this kind of fear is success. You need to practice driving in a safe environment (maybe your neighborhood, or a part of town where traffic isn't so heavy and there are fewer tricky intersections). Gradually move up to driving in harder environments until you build up your skills and your confidence enough that you can cruise Sunset Blvd. without fear. You can do this, you just need to crawl for a while before you try to fly.

if you're afraid of driving in such a busy place like LA, you should start driving in lower density traffic areas.

Industrial Areas on weekends are a good start, the roads are usually wider and due to it being a weekend there isn't much traffic around

new housing estates are also excellent places to start driving

it's all well and good to know the road rules from a book, but you really need to put your knowledge into practice. Build up confidence driving around these areas and then slowly move up to back streets, suburban areas on the edge of town, then on to the main roads and roundabouts.

the best way is to confront your fear, don't try to drive in the middle of a busy road straight away, start small, then work your way up from there.

good luck!

Driving IS scary. A lot of people feel just like you when they start to drive and driving in LA! Yikes!

But you know what? The more you drive, the better you will get at it. Take a driving class with an instructor and then ease into it - start on less busy streets at less busy times and work your way into driving at more challenging times and in more challenging areas.

You'll be okay, dear! Take your time and give yourself a break!

Well, you're going to have to find a way to overcome this fear of yours or you're going to end up on Valium or Xanax for the rest of your life. Try meditation!
