In the UK we have Family History societies which are a good starting point if you know from what area (County) your ancestors came from. I guess there are similar in the Republic of Ireland too.

Why not leave names and info on here - it's a long shot, but you might be lucky, and your question would be a lot more valid than a lot of the drivel posted on Yahoo answers.

Your genealogy is never "complete." Every name you uncover means there are two more to do (their parents) if not more (their children, siblings, spouses).

If you're concerned about leaving the information for your children, I would suggest that you start going through what you have and putting it in writing in a form that they'll understand. There are several ways to do this, but try to include research notes too when you do it. What you've already searched and what you were planning to search but haven't gotten around to, that way if one of your kids wants to take up the search after you're gone, they'll know where you left off.

Do you have an Ancestry.com membership? Normally, this opens up a lot of new information (you should still verify it of course, if there isn't an original image like there is for the census) that you may not have had. This will be cheaper than a professional researcher.

Good luck!

You may have a problem in Ireland as a lot of the records were destroyed during the Easter Rising. I have a relative in Ireland doing ongoing research, travelling from county to county and hasn't been able to discover anything I don't already know that was recorded in the family bible.

Many of the records STILL DO exist, although they are stored at the local level rather than in Dublin. The expense of discovering anything worth finding would be quite large.

The whole point of leaving Ireland in the first place was to
improve one's lot in life and provide for a better future.
There's no point in exhausting your life savings by going back.

My advice would be to use that money and take your kids on a family cruise or host them at a 'LOST ANCESTORS' party. They'll never forget you for it.

I am not a "professional", and I offer my help for free. If you would like a bit of help I would be quite happy to see if I can find any of your ancestors, for you. If you would like to email me my address is mamsgel1956@yahoo.co.uk I would need names, birth places and dates if you know them or if you don't now any dates just a rough idea as to their age, hope to hear from you very soon, Diane.
