How many bullets does the average m-16 toting U.S. grunt have on a patrol where there is expected violence?

I carried on average 18 X 30Round Magazines of 5.56mm in Baghdad(540 rds) but thats just me.

Basic load back then was 120 rounds. The reality was and is that most of the time a soldier can have as much ammo as he feels able to carry. The weight adds up.

RE OPSEC comment.

Perhaps they need to take it off the miltiary website also.

But seriously, I have yet to meet a combat troop that did not have something "more" than he was suppose to have, even if it is an extra knife.

basic load is 210 rounds. anything else is unit SOP and none of your business. OPSEC

I was of the belief, that there was only a maximum..and that was as many mags, as you could carry and still shoot
