My dogs are the same way. They know their food is there and neither of them tries to get it all so they just eat when they're hungry. It's good especially with a big dog that they don't try to eat it all at once as fast as they can. It sounds like he's not going to gorge himself just because the food is there. Unless he shows signs of putting on extra weight, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Read the recommended amount on the side of the dog food package. You can end up with a fat Dane and that can cause a lot of complications. If you want just break the recommended amount into two portions and give him breakfast and dinner. Don't over feed him. Some dogs will just keep eating even though they aren't hungry anymore.

I think you may be over feeding your Great Dane with free choice feeding....
If you are feeding free choice are you feeding the correct amount the Dane needs for his/her age and size.

When you feed free choice you are not able to observe if your dog is sick, the one good sign a dog is sick or something is wrong with the dog is by how the dog reacts to the food, a dog will refuse feeding if he/she are injured or sick.

I hope you reconsider another way of feeding your Great Dane

I free fed my dogs for many years.
I can not do so now as the female weim I have is a PIG and will eat everything in the bowl no matter how much you put in it. We tried several times and we now feed only at certain times.
I prefer to free feed as the dogs are usually not very food motivated when fed like that as they can have food when ever and it is no big deal. I like that they can eat when ever and most tend to stay at a healthy weight as long as they are gettin exercise. With a large dog and one who has the large chest and bloat can be a problem for Danes free feeding is a good choice as they are less likey to bloat as they tend to nibble more and not eat two big meals per day. Watch your dogs body condition carefully and make sure you can just feel ribs when petting down his sides. If he looses or gains change what you do but most times free fed dogs do very well.

Maybe, maybe not. It depends on your dog.

I have always been able to just keep their bowls full, and they come and eat when they feel like it. They never eat just because there's food there but only when they are hungry, and none of them have ever been overweight. However, some dogs will eat forever as long as there is food there. With dogs like that, it is not a good idea to just keep their bowl full, but to feed the recommended amount on the dog food bag, or whatever your vet told you.

Any animal can be over fed...You are suppose to put the food down for 30 minutes and If they don't eat pick it up and feed them there second meal at the time it is suppose to be given.I do not do it.I am like you and put full bowls down for my 4 dogs and refill when empty. My dogs look like the Michelin tire man....So yeah they can be over fed.

Do NOT free feed a Dane!!! make sure to give measured amounts of a good quality food twice daily.

Sure you can. Every dog can be over fed. It is wise to measure out the amount of food your dog needs for each day. The food you are feeding will tell you how much your dog should have in one day. If you free feed, and it sounds like you are then measure it out and give your dog that much per day. This way you will know exactly how much your feeding your dog.

My dog does the same thing sometimes he'll skip a day of eating, and then scoff down his food like he's never seen food before. Sometimes we refill it then, but we only give him half the amount this way he doesn't over eat this is a good way to control his appetite.

Well, just monitor his eating. If he is eating more than what is needed, just don't fill the dish again for that day. If he is not overeating, then yes just keep chow in his dish at all times.

Just make a habit of putting food in his dish every morning or something.
