To try and tell you who is the most successful commander of all time will be a debate that will last for all time. here are some of my personal choices
.) Alexander the Great, the military is still learning some of battles he did.
.) Hannibal, Took a whole army across the Alps including Elephants! He also took on 10 Legions with lesser amount of men
.) Julius Caesar, Did a DOUBLE encirclement against a larger force then his.
.) Genghis Khan, Took a huge amount of Asia and Russia, He's the reason for the great wall.
.) Napoleon, took most of Europe, the only thing that stop him was the Russian Winter.
.) Robert E. Lee, He gave the North a bloody nose until he meet Grant
.) Grant, He took control of The Mississippi River Valley
.) Sherman, Destroyed a large amount of Georgia in his march to the sea.
.) Zhukov. Saved Russia at Stalingrad, and Kurisk
.) IKE. He guided the Allies to victory in the Western Campaign.
.) Patton. He was the most aggressive General of the Western Front He had the fastest advancing troops (Battle of the Bulge)
.)Rommel. The Army was so uncatchable that he's army was dubbed "The Phantom Army." He was a tough Opponent in North Africa.

If you are talking America it's George Washington, without him, there is no country. Globally I would agree with Alexander the Great.
