on pimp my ride the US version, the cars are practically falling apart at the start (I know that's the point of the show) but what i want to know is how do these people get away with driving cars in such bad state? here in uk all cars over 3 years old must take an annual MOT test to ensure they are road-worthy. Is there not something similar in the US?

Not really. Once your vehicle is registered and insured, you only need to have an emission test done every few years. Only time it has to be re-inspected (safety) is when the registration is transferred. But not required when transferring from a parent to child.

This is something decided at the state level in the US - in many cases, the states can behave like separate countries when it comes to their legal systems. Some states have an inspection to make sure a car is roadworthy. Most states merely test to make sure it does not put out excessive amounts of pollution and leave it up to the owner to decide if they think the car is safe enough to drive, and sometimes skip even the emissions test if you don't live near a big city.

It's pretty rare for mechanical failure to cause an accident anyway. And thankfully, the cars on "Pimp my Ride" represent the worst of the worst.
