I want to switch my cats off their current dry food (science diet...not good for them) and was wondering what everyone thought about the brand: Blue Spa Select adult chicken and brown rice recipe. Is it a good quality dry food for them? Thanks for you help!

I hadn't heard of this brand of cat food so I looked them up on the internet ( www.bluebuff.com/products/cats_adult.shtml ). The ingredients appear to be what healthy cats needs.

When reading a pet food label, keep these points in mind (for cat food):
-The protein for adult cats should be no less than 28%; for kittens and lactating females no less than 30%. (This pet food shows the protein at 34%.)
-Taurine must be present. This is an amino acid that is important for overall and muscular health. (Taurine is present in this brand.)
-The first ingredient listed should be a meat not a by-product, corn, or "meal." (The first ingredient is "deboned chicken;" good.)

There's only one thing I want to mention...you said that you had your cat is on Science diet...I'm assuming your referring to Science Diet Maintenance (this is the "regular" food). If your cat is on a prescription diet through Science Diet for urinary tract or kidney health (U/D or K/D) than I would not go with the Blue Spa Select adult chicken. This food has a high amount of protien, if your cat is suceptaible to urinary tract infection/blockages and/or kidney disease, you should not use foods that have a high protein content. Before switching, it would be a good idea to discuss this with your Veterinarian. There are other cat food companies that make food for urinary tract and kidney health such as (I.e. Waltham). Cats, male cats in particular, are prone to developing urinary tract problems (FLUTD: Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) and urinary blockages. So, if you know your cat has or is prone to urinary tract diseases and you want to switch foods, research various cat foods and speak to your Veterinarian, otherwise, your cat could have some major consequences.

Blue is a quality cat food and that sounds good to me. It is not available where I live (unless I want to make a 60 mile round trip and I don't have to do that for good cat food).

I have only one cat who eats dry food. I use Natural Balance, CA Natural, Solid Gold and By Nature's Organic and Nature's Logic for her. I do not feed just ONE brand. I rotate among the ones mentioned and she has no trouble switching from one to another. NB has a venison and pea aside from their chicken and Nature's Logic is duck. I think it is good for cats to have other than just chicken all their lives.

If you make a switch to another dry food do it gradually, mixing 3/4 old food with the new for five days or so, then go to a 1/2, 1/2 mixture for another period, then move to 3/4 new food to 1/4 old for another short period. That way the cat won't refuse the "better" food and there will be no stomach upsets or diarrhea.

To find the best cat foor you want to make sure there are NO by products or corn fillers those are both bad. It does smell bad but soft food is much better for cats. They are carnivors and don't need grain but they do need a little veggies. Same thing with wet food NO by product or corn fillers. This can also stop any chance of a urinary infection which causes them to pee outside of the litter box. You can find a healthy pet store near you my entering your zip code in the site www.canidae.com they would also have more info for you.

I am feeding my cats Iams less active indoor, which is available almost everywhere. They seem to be thriving on it. Eyes are bright, fur is shiny, cats are active. The bonus is that their litter boxes are a whole lot less stinky than with Science Diet. When my husband and I married and combined our households and cats, he was feeding his show cats Science Diet. I fed my mutt cats Iams and mine looked better than his! I've never heard of Blue Spa Select -- sounds expensive.

I have a couple of cats with sensitive stomachs. They barfed up everything from Purina to Science Diet. We finally found IAMS active maturity and they do great with that stuff.
