It might be up to the individual officer or detective who is handling the case. It is put on his/her follow up case load. And after a while he/she might try to follow up. So, it definitely helps if you call him/her at work and try to get them to follow up or report the status of the case to you. If that gets you no where contact their supervisor and apply some pressure that way.

If you can get the media interested in the crime, the police will investigate it until the media gets tired of the idea. call your local newspaper and see if you can get some reporter interested in the crime.

Probably depends a lot on how severe the crime is.
