there are not enough funds in the account. The person that wrote it now lives in NY, I live in TN. How do I get my money from this check writer? I have tried several times to cash it but keep on being denied

You got screwed. Call a lawyer or go down to small claims court.

Check with your District Attorneys Office Check Fraud Division. Due to the amount of the check I do believe it is a felony and the writer can be prosecuted.

Also check with the Attorney General Office Fraud Division.

One or the other can help. After all they are civil servants and this is a law breaker were discussing. Make that point. Especially in election time and make it public if you have to.

Guess what? You have a bad check. Don't take checks from people who live that far away, it's hard to collect your money. There is nothing you can do unless you want to move to New York and hire an attorney. By now they probably have moved again. Good luck!

I don't know about the civil legal implications, but writing a bad check for that amount is a felony. The person could end up doing hard time.
