I had a min pin that did this. I know that it is not just sexual but also a display of dominance (hence why females do it too) but an animal behaviorist I worked with told me some small dogs feel the need to constantly show their dominance because of their size. Also if you have a small dog with an "alpha" personality and everyone in your family lets the dog know he is part of the pack but low on the totem pole so to speak he may just feel the need to dominate something anything at all. Most little dogs feel the NEED to prove that little applies only to their physical size. My Husband and myself are firm believers in pack mentality (I train dogs with this method with some of my own ideas thrown in) and so when we got Magnum (the min pin) we made sure he knew his place. Even my 3 year old son was in on his obedience training and the dog listened to him like he did us adults. I also had a huge Shepherd golden mix and he was patient with Magnum but let him know he was still beneath him. So poor guy was dominance frustrated. He had his favorite bear (that he humped til we had to replace it due to wear) but anything would do. Shoes even. Without knowing more about your dog I couldn't tell you what to do for him but if you want to email me with details I might could offer some advice.

Do you discourage it? If you let him know it's not acceptable, it'll usually stop or he'll only do it when you're not around.
