I am a Christian and have always been but never understood what happens after death. Does your soul rest until judgment day or are you judged at once. Or does your soul rise on the third day like Jesus? When are you judged?? Wheres your soul in the meantime?>

The question of what happens after death can be confusing. The Bible is not explicitly clear on when a person will reach their final eternal destiny. The Bible tells us that after the moment of death, a person is taken to Heaven or Hell based on whether he or she had received Christ as his or her Savior. For believers, after death is to be "away from the body and at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). For unbelievers, after death means everlasting punishment in Hell (Luke 16:22-23).

This is where it can get confusing as to what happens after death. Revelation 20:11-15 describes all those in Hell being cast into the lake of fire. Revelation chapters 21-22 describe a New Heaven and New Earth. Therefore, it seems that until the final resurrection, after death a person resides in a “temporary” Heaven and Hell. A person's eternal destiny will not change, but the precise "location" of a person's eternal destiny will change. At some point after death, believers will be sent to the New Heavens and New Earth (Revelation 21:1). At some point after death, unbelievers will be thrown into the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15). These are the final, eternal destinations of all people - based entirely on whether a person had trusted Jesus Christ alone for the salvation of their sins.

jacob: As a Christian, I can inform you that the "immortal soul" dogma, as proclaimed by some religions is not plausible. How can a "immortal soul" being "immortal" - of a non-material or non-physical nature be suffering in an ever-burning "hell" fire ? The immortal soul idea came about at the time of the ancient Egyptians and was conjured up to retain control over the general populace expounding fear. Later, through the sands of time, the Greeks similarily adopted the idea to meet the cause for the same end. (Ever wonder why animals - which have souls ( see: the book of Genesis ) , do not go to "Heaven" ? A "soul", is the "life-breath" (Hebrew word: "nephesh" or Greek word "psuche" ). The idea of the soul being immortal is not logical since how could a immortal soul die - if it is immortal ? ( see Book of Ezekiel 18th chapter, verse 20) Only Jesus has immortality ( see: the Book of First Timothy, chapter 6, verse 16). Now; to your question. Death is a state of sleep - your body decays inside the grave. When Jesus Christ returns to this Earth, Christians will rise from the grave [resurrection] to meet Him in the air [clouds] - the ones who are alive - who live (Christians) will immediately join the resurrected Christians ( see: First Thessalonians Chapter 4, verse 16) . YOU ARE the SOUL or in other words, the soul is YOU. To better understand the sequence of events concerning Christ's return and the resurrection from the dead for Christians see the Book of Revelation, Read the 20th Chapter. This is why you are having a rough time with understanding the "soul" and what happens to it.

The bible states that you stay in the grave until judgment day. Read Revelation.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

It is hard to understand. It is said; the body returns to the ground and the soul returns to God. But, when I read of the resurrection of the dead in Christ I wonder. We can speculate, but, I would never say my speculation is correct. Here I go; Time is nothing to God, this was created for man. God, I feel, will see past, present and future all together. When we die; regardless of the amount of time before the resurrection, it will seem as if we took a short nap. Though it may be 1,000 years. Lazarus is a good example. He was beginning to smell fairly ripe from what we read. Yet, he awoke as if he had just took a nap. So, my answer goes beyond conforming God to what we Believe. Though it may be 100 or 1,000 years from the day we die, it will seem as if our soul is with God at the time we die.

According to my religion, we all go the same place. A place where we have the chance to look over the things we did in this life. We see our mistakes, and we see the good things we did too. After a while, we are born again, so that we can have the chance to perform a better job. We can have several lives, until we reach a point of perfection, and then we dont have to be born again, we will stay in the other side just helping those that are still here.

My religion is Spiritism.

Peace!

I believe the soul (nephesh/psuche) is mortal and depends on body and spirit to exist. The soul is merely yourself and a projection of your mind. This projection shuts off when you die and you must be resurrected back to life to live again (death is the opposite of life). Animals are souls too, only difference is they are not sinners, as far as i know.

Outside of the bible, it's whatever you want it to be.
