An RD, registered dietitian, is a four year degree. They often work for hospitals, consulting with patients about special diets. For medical reasons, patients may be on low salt, low fiber, high fiber diets, etc. The dietitian teaches people what foods to eat to stick to the diet the Dr. prescribed. They also do a lot of diabetic teaching now days. It's extremely important what a diabetic eats, in what proportions, and when. Dietitians teach this to diabetics.

Dietitians can also have a private practice and either have people referred to them by Dr's. or take private clients. Some people who are very health conscious will see a dietitian for help in developing an optimal diet for them.

Dietitians also teach people how to read labels on food products and how to use that information for their health.

Dietitians also develop menus for different diets. Most nursing homes consult dietitians to develop food plans for specific problems.

As the population becomes more obese and the baby boomers age, there's going to be more and more work for dietitians.

You could talk to your school counselor or see a counselor at a local junior college in order to find out what kind of classes you'd need to take.
