Take him to the park and let him run around - it's a great form of excercise for you and him and he'll get tired before you.

My son is an only child with no same aged neighbors nearby. I play with him a lot, as I can. If he doesn't know what to do, I'll play board games (he's 6...Candyland, etc.), then we'll switch to playing with trucks, where after a short while, I'll excuse myself to go do some of my work. He does need to be able to play by himself, too. I come back and play a little more....perhaps with a pretend telephone game. He made up a game where I have to call him at the "pizza shop". It's good for kids to be able to go to a variety of toys/playtime, to play with Mommy, but also to be able to play alone for awhile, too.
Have fun!

Forget new toys, (no offense intended) that is what is wrong with children, they have no immagination and can't function with out the newest greatest thing. Take him on a walk with a list of out door things he needs to find, leaves, sticks, rocks and such. Go to the park. Let him draw, color inside, paint with water outside. Have him build a tent inside out of chairs and sheets. Have him help you make cookies, or something of that nature. Read him a book. There are all kinds of things you can do, he is at a great age to learn to be creative. You just have to point him in the right direction

Play with him. Have him help you in the kitchen. Kids love that. Kids can tear up lettuce for a salad, or help stir. When my son was 18 months I let him stir the butter and sugar for cookies. Have him help you clean up the house. My son is now 2 1/2 and he gets $1 a week for helping put his toys away. Put on some music and dance around the house with him. Get the Crayola Mess-Free markers or washable markers and let him draw.

Play with him, is the only way. They love that!. You can also, both of you draw, teach him how to do it. Draw trees, the sun, The moon, stars, a river, the sea, a cat, etc, etc...
Also tell him stories, they understand, believe it or not. But it is very important that you talk to him all the time, explain always what you are doing, how you do it, and why you are doing it.
The play option is fantastic because they "burn" energies, that they need to burn, and then they get tired and hungry. Give them a bath, their food, and they can take a nap.
When playing with them, they love balls uufff.. all the time, or jumping, running. That is perfect. I don't have kids, but I have nephews, and They adore me because of that, I am the adult who always play with them.. take him to the park.
Good luck...

PS: Please, The T.V. is not a good option. Don't do that, and be patient ...
