I bought a treadmill to help me get in better shape, I used it for about 15 min. and when I got off I was dizzy for about 4 or 5 min. and felt like I was going to pass out the room just spun. Why. I am only 27, and not severly over weight but like 20 for my body type? I hate to give up just after 1 time please any suggestions

The same thing happens to me. I think it has something to do with the inner ear, because I get motion sick quite easily too.

The trick is to gradually slow down. If you walk for 15 minutes, then plan on taking another 5 minutes to slow down. I lower the speed very gradually, getting down to .5 mph and walk at that rate for at least a minute. Then when you stop walking, stand still on the treadmill for another minute or two. I walk in front of a TV which makes it easier to spend the time slowing down. I also find looking around while walking, from one side to another occasionally helps prevent the dizziness a bit. Good luck! Don't give up!!

There are several things that might have caused this:
- you started too fast- do not start sprinting right away if you haven't been working out for years. www.runnersworld.com
has excellent advice on how to use a treadmill, and they also have work out programs that help you gradually get into shape
-you didn't drink enough water. Make sure you drink enough water throughout the day, and have a bottle handy while you work out. Do not gulp lots of cold water while you work out, as that can also make you feel dizzy. Take a small sip every 5 minutes.
-your blood pressure may be high to begin with. That's why they advice you to check with your doctor before you start working out.
-your blood sugar was low- that can be fixed by eating something very small 20 minutes before you work out. A banana, an apple, or several strawberries would do the trick.

Do not start running right away. Start by alternating walking and running , and increase the numbers of minutes you run every week.
Start by 3 minutes of brisk fast walking followed by 1-2 minutes of running. Repeat 5-10 times, depending on how much time you have.
Increase the number of minutes you run and decrease the number of minutes you walk by 1 every week or every other week.Always warm up with 2-3 minutes of walking, and cool down with 2-3 minutes of walking at a moderate pace.
Good luck

A person typically gets dizzy and can see stars because of a lack of oxygen to your brain.

First and foremost you need to stretch before you start.

Secondly, get a heart monitor and keep your heart rate down around 140 beats per minute... you do this by slowing down or reducing effort. Rest if you have to.

Finally before you stop exercise.. you need to slowly lower your heart rate to around 110 beats per minute..... Then bring the machine to a halt... then stand there for at least 30 seconds supporting yourself.

The latter advice is by reason that when you stop you will feel a little dis-orientated because you have been moving your body but your visual ques say that you have been standing still... so when you actually stop exercising... your visual ques trick your brain that you are still moving... and you have a motion imbalance... (like getting off a boat after traveling in one for a while) that could be the effect you think is "dizziness"... or if your heart rate is high, it is the lack of oxygen to the brain.

I am 28 and I just started an exercise routine, I include a treadmill with this routine. I feel disoriented when I get off for the first minute of so, and not as much since I've been doing it for the last two weeks. Get a check up with your doc and if your okay, just "work it out"

Don't give up just after 1 time!
Try eating a little something before using your treadmill. Try a fruit or a lean protein. Also, make sure you're getting the water in!!!

If you keep having problems, have a talk with your doctor.

Good luck!☺

Make sure you are eating before you start (not a full blown meal, but maybe some yogurt or a banana). Make sure you are starting off at a reasonable speed, if you aren't used to working out the best thing is to slowly get into it. Not to mention, you don't want to wear yourself out and discourage yourself from doing it again.
I also recommend walking for a few minutes before you run. My only other advice is to drink plenty of water. If you continue to experience dizziness you should consult a doctor.

most people get like that for the first two weeks. just drink a lot of water and eventually it will stop over time. it happened to me and if you read sites about treadmills, you will see they say the same thing. your walking and running on something that is moving and your not, so to speak.

If you have no health problem, I suggest you start small, and make 15 minutes your goal, not your starting point.

Did you a) drink enough water (don't guzzle, just drink enough), b) overdo it the exercise or stop suddenly instead of gradually slowing your speed? (not good), c) check with a doctor before exercising (you should)
