Why is it that more people are duped into Christianity through the fear of hell and satan than they are by the "love of god". Noone becomes a christian because they want to be "good", if that was the case they'd just start animal shelters, or give all of their money to charities. The fear of satan probably sells more bibles than anything else, and as any preacher can attest, is definitely what brings in the big money via collection plate on Sunday. Is satan really the christian's best friend?

"lesser silly questions", huh? Thanks for the tip, maybe you should bone up on the English language before giving advice though. I'm drunk, and even I caught that one.

mjr_86: I agree that going to church when you're little and reading the bible once doesn't make you an expert on christianity. But being the child of a Baptist Minister certainly makes you qualified to make the kind of statements I have.

The Nine Satanic Statements

from The Satanic Bible, ©1969

by Anton Szandor LaVey

[français]

1. Satan represents indulgence instead of abstinence!

2. Satan represents vital existence instead of spiritual pipe dreams!

3. Satan represents undefiled wisdom instead of hypocritical self-deceit!

4. Satan represents kindness to those who deserve it instead of love wasted on ingrates!

5. Satan represents vengeance instead of turning the other cheek!

6. Satan represents responsibility to the responsible instead of concern for psychic vampires!

7. Satan represents man as just another animal, sometimes better, more often worse than those that walk on all-fours, who, because of his “divine spiritual and intellectual development,” has become the most vicious animal of all!

8. Satan represents all of the so-called sins, as they all lead to physical, mental, or emotional gratification!

9. Satan has been the best friend the Church has ever had, as He has kept it in business all these years!

The majority (all?) of evangelical denominations would not agree that a fear of Satan is a compelling reason for belief. In fact, scripture claims that Satan will be tormented the worst. So, contrary to the popular misconception, it will not be Satan doing the tormenting.

It's true the fear of hell does invoke a lot of confessions of faith. However, statistics show that an embarrassing number of converts fall away never to return. A fear of hell may get a person listening, but the conviction doesn't last long, and before you know it, they are living just as they did before the scare. A true Christian, who endures till the end, will certainly not do so for a fear of hell. It ends up being a desire to please God out of love for Him, and a compassion on others.

You are so ignorant. Look I know dozens of pastors and I can tell you right now we are as poor as civil servants. People making as preachers are as rare as artists that make money. The only who make money off the Bible is companies like Zondervon. Do some research, Christians are demanded to understand you yet you don't understand us ! Hypocrites one and all. By the way, going to Church on Sunday when you were little and even reading the Bible once does not mean you know squat about Christianity!!!

I disagree. Christ is a cool guy.

Christianity, as a religion, bites.

"Christians" took a good idea (following the example of Jesus) and put a bunch of garbage on top of it, like giving all your money and stuff to the church (either willingly or through coercion, like with the Inquisition or Witch Trials), heaven/hell, the Rapture, all that crap.

If you followed Christ's example, you would awaken the Christ (enlightened spiritual part) within.

I mean, it's good to have a role model.

But Christianity, as a religion, doesn't follow Christ's example. They just slap a cross on a bunch of hypocritical, mean, cruel rubbish and claim it's "Christian."

Which is the true meaning of taking the Lord's name in vain.

Bad Christians! BAD!!!!

Oh, and the idea of a dual nature of divinity was borrowed from Zoroastrianism, a parallel religion to Judaism that is still around, but limited.

They said that there was no good without evil, no Light God without a Dark God/Devil type.

WRONG !!! - I'm a Christian because I am "called" of the love of God to be. "Perfect love casts out all fear" ( First book of John, 4th chapter, verse 18). Yes; far too many people subscribe to a "doom and gloom" approach to the Christian life, which runs contrary, to the GOOD news [gospel] of the kingdom of God. Satan, the Adversary, likes to sow fear, doubt and worry - all erodes the Christian faith !!!

You are wrong there. I do want to be good.Life is a lot less complicated and a lot less stressful if everyone gets along.I do not need hate and discontent in my life and if everyone were GOOD then think how nice the world would be.If everyone tried to do as the bible says there would be no starvation,no murder,no drug addicts,no homeless,no one depressed,no one lonesome....It would be great....Just think of all the fun and closeness the world would have and there would be no fear.....To want to do good is a good attribute not a flaw in ones personality..

I wouldn't say that, though alot of people do come to Christ through the fear of Hell and Satan. This shouldn't be the main reason, but sadly it is.

Don't let it worry you overmuch, Hun.
Jesus does know the difference.
His sheep hear His voice, and He knows them...a Stranger's voice they will not follow.

In other words, Jesus' disciples aren't wasting their money putting it in collection plates in big churches trying to buy "fire insurance". They can't even hear those preachers calling to them. They have Jesus.

Well, I definitely wouldn't say that "no one" becomes Christian just to be good, but I would say that the majority of people don't. I guess we all really do believe in hell deep down, and most of us don't want to go there, so we pour ourselves in late life into our religion so you don't have to suffer after your nearing death.

happy national popsicle day as declared by me. ♥

If you stop bothering your sensitive mind with the Christians, you'll find yourself asking every day lesser silly questions.
