The kind of dog depends on how much playtime, work you are willing to give it, and if you want a purebred or mutt. Purebreds are usuallly only good for if you want to show and breeding, mutts usually have the better personalities and are the best types to get. If you do get a purebreed, a good small dog would be a dauchsaund. They are very loving and good family dogs-usually. I hope this helped and good luck! Have fun with your new dog! =]

There's no one "best type of dog." There's a best type of dog for each individual situation though. You said you have kids, which is important information to know, but a lot of the answer also depends on where you live and your lifestyle.

Do you live in an apartment? Do you have a house? If so, does the house have a yard? A big yard or a small yard? Do you have an active lifestyle, or a more laid-back one? Do you want a dog that's going to go jogging with you every morning, or a dog that is ok with sitting on the sofa every day?

Off the top of my head, I would say that Labs are great for families. They're not dumb, so they're pretty easy to train. And they listen to you once you train them. And good with kids.

You could say all those same things about Golden Retrievers too. Also smart and good with kids are Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties), and they're a bit smaller. But they have long hair, so you have to be OK with doing some grooming.

Don't listen to anyone who says to get a Husky. Huskies are absolutely beautiful but they're generally a terrible choice for most people. Huskies have been bred to be very independent and hard-headed, so training is very, very hard and they're never going to really listen to you. They do their own thing because they think they're smarter than you are. They have also been bred for more than 100 years to pull sleds. You know what that means? That means as soon as you hook them up to a leash, they think it's pull the owner time! Huskies are the number 1 breed of dog that gets abandoned or given to a shelter because the owners can't deal with their stubborn personalities.

Hmm. it all depends on what size dog you want. German Shepherds are good dogs...but I would only get one from a reputable breeder as they can have aggression issues and I'm not sure I would trust one around small children. Golden retrievers are *great* with children but they are a large dog and require alot of attention with their heavy coats. Labradors are good family dogs too.

If you want something smaller you can't go wrong with a Norwegian elkhound. They're a medium sized dog, very beautiful. We've had 3 of them over the years and you couldn't ask for a better family dog. They're smart, easily trained, just need their fur trimmed in the summer when it gets hot, and very gentle with children and yet will keep watch for strangers at night ^_^

(Huskies are good dogs, but they're extremely high energy dogs and need alot of space to run )

Well, my friends have a lab, I think, who is friendly and energetic, also golden retrievers are great with kids.
Avoid rotwielers and pitbulls!
Also, you can look online for sites that recommend dogs, type in the search engine 'good dogs to get' or something.
Hope this helps!

We have had Labs since our kids were very young. My husband hunts so they are working dogs as well, but they are so very sweet and at the same time are very protective(no one comes near my kids that the dogs don't know!). They are an all around great dog, but they do need room to run and play. Guess it depends on your living situation and what size dog you want.

German shepards can be very high strung as wellas dalmations and labs. Golden retrivers are fantastic my little girl rides ours like a horse. Small dogs are more work than they seem and a lot of the breeds have emotional issues that cause them to fear bite and pee in the house, with enough attention they make great pets, but they need ALOT of attention in the beginning.
