As a kid growing up on a ranch I used them for both.
If any one thinks it’s not up to the job they never owned a good one.
Mine would blow right trough a pigeon in the barn and the heavy corrugated sheet metal roof.
Trust me my dad was not happy when the rain came and the barn leaked like a sieve.
I hunted rabbits squirrels and snakes and birds all the way up to being allowed to hunt with my 22 rifle, pistol or shot gun, and then even after when I ran out of bullets, me and my BB gun was off and running again.
The BB gun of today are not the same as the ones 4 decades ago when they had some power.
But the still can do the job with a quality weapon.
But to answer your question either or, it can be use for both.
The key words are “Quality weapon”
That my opinion.

Differant types of BB guns out there. The daisy Red Rider would not be good for anytype of hunting, unless you are hunting bugs. But a Crossman Marksman ( or simaler type) that you can pump many times WILL kill a rat, squirrel, rabbit or bird and it uses either BB's or pellets.
That said, Air Guns , either BB or pellet are not Good for hunting, but many a hunter got their start with them. Get a .22 and go to the woods for tree rats.

BB guns do not have the power to kill something unless it is something small like a bird or a mouse or some other smaller creature, for most often it will only wound and irritate. Definately not a good choice for hunting.

They said BB gun not Pellet gun there is a difference! They are not good also! They may knock down a squirrel but only to mame or injure it!!!!!!!!!!
Mostly to put an eye out or injure an animal. I't s not hardly strong enough to break the skin on a human. At most the BB will go right under the skin and have to be removed. It can also put a persons eye out if the stray BB were to hit someone in the eye. It can only injure a bird but not kill it (that is cruel) They are o good!!!It will lay there and suffer and eventually die. They should've be outlawed many years ago.

bb guns can be for either depending on the power of the gun . i my self hunt squirrels and game a little bigger, rock chucks mostly. alot depends on the placement of the shot on the animal headshots work best and it improves your accurracy when aimming at a small target with a small caliber off a weapon, i use a bb/ pellet rifle .177 cal. if sighted in right it works

Hitting targets only. BB guns don't provide damage to down a typical animal. Worse yet, it could agitate the creature to attack you.

When my cousins were boys they played cowboys and indians with BB guns. Somehow they managed to grow up with the right number of eyes.
No good for hunting.

Steve, I have a cross-man 770 that I use to knock down squirrels at up to 60-70 Ft. I use the french balistic pellets sold by copper head.
