They feed off of dead things, clearing area and creating more soil for plants to grow. These plants are eaten by animals. when the animals die, it starts all over again.

Fungi perform essential roles in every terrestrial ecosystem, as decomposers of dead organic matter; releasing nutrients, supporting plant life on poor soils by improving the absorption of nutrients when they form mycorrhizal associations with roots, and then there are those that live inside plants as endophytes. Any deterioration in fungal populations and diversity can therefore have a considerable impact on ecosystem health.

Fungi are necessary in ecosystems for many reasons, including these:
1. Fungi are decomposers. They break down dead organic matter and wastes to return the nutrients to the soil. This is perhaps the most important one.
2. Fungi form relationships with many plants, growing attached to the plant roots and acting as unimaginable complex root extensions. They increase the surface area for absorption of water and minerals. They also digest organic matter in the soil, making it directly available to the plant roots. These fungi are called mycorrhizae.
3. Fungi and algae in mutualistic relationships form the lichens that you see growing on sidewalks, rocks, trees, etc. Lichens are important as habitat for tiny creatures and as food for many animals, especially in colder climates. Lichens are pioneer species in primary succession, living on bare rock and helping to build a thin layer of soil.
4. Fungi are food for other organisms, including people when we eat fungi such as mushrooms, yeasts, certain molds in cheeses, etc.
5. Fungi are habitat for the tiny creatures that live in the pores and folds of the fungal bodies.
6. Fungi cause diseases of plants and animals: rusts, smuts, ringworm, athlete's foot, ...

Plenty more, but you get the idea.
