Ok, I have a 3 month old puppy. We've had her since January 17th and every time we have company, she growls and barks at our guests. Even after our guests has been been over for awhile, she still continues to growl and bark at them. Why does she do this?

Another question. How long will it take for a dog to stop "teething"?

this is a very hard behaviour to stop. my chihuahua had the exact same problem. she would bark at people all the time even if they were outside the house.

I have done a lot of research on this behaiviour and the best thing that I have came across was that if your dog isn't trying to bite the people then everytime you have someone comeinto your house then have them pet your dog. this will help your dog understand that when people are comming into the house then they aren't there to harm them.

the way I see it is if the dog is barking at the visitors it's more then likely from teritorial reasons. if your dog is preforming this behaviour often and to everyone then you might have some dominatcy issues as well you dog also needs to relize that your house is yours. you control the household and everyone that comes into it.

but over all I would like to sugest to you that you get some pet training at petsmart or somewere like that. it helps.

if you don't stop this behaviour soon it might esculate into something way worse that you peobably can't stop ever. so get some help with this problem as soon as posable.

Your puppy knows these people do not belong there and they are frightening her so she's letting them know that she's got her eye on them.
Everytime you have guests the pup should be put in another room until they are settled.Explain to them that you're trying to socialize her but she is very skittish.Tell them they can help in her training if when you let her into the room they sit still and act naturally. No sudden movements. And they are to pretend that she's not there at all no matter how much noise she makes.
After your company is all settled put her on a leash and bring her in.Everytime she barks or growls give the leash a little jerk and tell her no.Let her smell everyone at will but everytime she barks give her a correction.Pretty soon she'll realize these people are no threat and her actions force a correction from you that she won't like and she'll quit.

Your dog is seeking attention and when she barks and growls you give her attention. Next time a friend comes over move her away from the door (do not carry) she must stay a good 5 feet away. Have her sit and wait till you open the door, if she moves put her back. NEVER answer a door while your dog is displaying anxiety. When you can open the door w/o her barking invite your guest in and instruct them not to recognize the dog, ignore her. Eventually she will come around in a calm state knowing that's the only way she receives attention. Never show attention to and excited dog, and if you are saying "NO" allot you are fighting a losing battle.

I would do a bit of training. SWhe should look to you as her pack leader si if you dont mind these new people she shouldnt either.

If you dont take the lead though she seems them as a threat to her place in the pack and wants to show them that this is her place.

You can put her on a lead , let her sniff the guests when they arrive and reassure her that its ok. Hold her on your lap or next to you and get her to sit , pet her so she can see there is no danger and you are still paying her attention . If she still barks or nips at them give her a swat and command NO.

You might put her on her bed in a closed room until the guests leave .

haha,
soo sweet you got her on my b'day :D
it all depends on the breed of your dog. All of them have a different temperament. By the sound of it seems like a small breed to me.
Mostly smaller dogs are more bark bark.... since they are much more possessive of the master.
Avoid keeping the pup leashed, and I'm not very sure but is the place where your friends/guests sit the usual place for the pup to sit/play?
Please don't ignore the pup when guests are over, this will just make her more aggressive. Give them the love and importance and they will love it :)
psst. animals are great judge of character as its their instinct.

Cheers :D

I personally own a dog and he has the same problem. I suspect that it's all because of the fact that your puppy does not remember the people that visit. My friends have been over many times, but my dog still barks at them.

She is having a fit because she doesn't know these people. I have a dog that is 11 and still has a fit when people come over and my other dogs couldn't care less if people are here or not. She will teeth until her teeth have completely came in.

you need to watch The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic channel. Your dog is a reflection of YOU,somehow she feels insecure in the presence of other people. Take her for long walks so that she does'nt have that much energy when guest are expected. Always remember that they are dogs NOT BABIES

maybe she thinks she has to protect you and your family. Do your guest own any pets she could be smelling the pets on your guest. If she hasn't been around people much since birth (well other than your family) she could be afraid of people take her out and let her get socialized with all types of people. Good Luck!

The dog is not sure about the person and wants to show that it is brave and dominate. I suggest when the guest comes in they should totally ignore the dog.
