The soul is the inner person - the unseen "You".
The Bible and virtually every major religion of man throughout the ages recognizes the reality of the soul. Where they differ is what becomes of the soul after the body dies.
The Bible clearly teaches that consciousness continues after death(see Luke 16:19-31), and that men enter into a fixed, permanent state, of either eternal blessedness or eternal misery.

A human is made of three parts, the body, the soul and the spirit. The soul encompasses three things, the mind, the emotions, and the will of a person. The soul is separate from the body and that is easy to illustrate if you just look at a dead person. The Bible also tells as that the soul is a separate entity from the spirit. The soul is that part which relates to the natural world, while the spirit is the part of us that relates to God and the spiritual realm.

We ARE a soul. Our bodies... ourselves. The creation account in Genesis says that God breathed into the man the breath of life and he BECAME a living soul. It doesn't say he came to HAVE a living soul nor does it indicate any separate creation aside from his perfect human body.
Look at it this way... in old times, when a ship sank they used to talk about the number of "souls" lost. That would be lives.
Combine that with Ezekiel 18:4 that says "the soul that is sinning, it itself will die:

I think 'soul' is an aspect of brain/mind, something that feels undefinable, almost separate.
Christianity has had a strong sense of dichotomy (seeing things in terms of pairs or opposites) from the beginning, and really elevated the mind over the body. So anything that was connected to the divine was necessarily seen as separate from the body.

We don't HAVE souls, we ARE souls. The soul is not a separate entity that survives the death of the body. Genesis 2:7 : "... and the man came to be a living soul." The Bible says that animals are also souls and that the soul dies, it is not immortal. (Ezekiel 18:4) Our spirit is our life force, the breath of life.

The soul can't exist on its own. It is a byproduct - the fusion of physical body and spirit. Take any one of these components resulted to the demise of the soul. Most of us attributed our individuality with this byproduct against our true identity as spirit. Ultimately, we will all undergo a process where we can start living as one spirit. A soul is bornt out of the confusion of the spirit from what it is to what it becomes different with a physical body. The reaction and response of the spirit based on what it is currently experiencing is what brought out the individuality of the souls. One way of saying what soul is - it is ego. And ego is the stumbling block that sets out from identifying our true self from the false one.

Every human being on planet earth has a soul. In the beginning God created man in His image and likness. When God breathed into Adam He created him a living intellect having a mind, will and emotion (a soul). God who is Spirit breathed into Adam His Spirit whch made Adam both Spirit and Soul.
There is a seperation for distinction that God has made in Hebrews chapter 4:12 - That revals that the two can be seperated for distinction showing when you are operating independent from God (fleshly) or waking in the Spirit (spiritual man or women). They bible declares that the soul that sins shall surley die.

The soul is the "real you", it is eternal, the body is just merely a "home" for the spirit. When we die the spirit leaves our body, and then during the ressurection, the body and the soul reunite in a pure and "perfect" state. Without a body, we wouldnt be on earth, without a soul we wouldnt be.

I believe the soul (nephesh/psuche) is mortal and depends on body and spirit to exist. The soul is merely yourself and a projection of your mind. This projection shuts off when you die and you must be resurrected back to life to live again (death is the opposite of life). Animals are souls too, only difference is they are not sinners, as far as i know.
Outside of the bible, it's whatever you want it to be.
