No, I don't think the world needs a religion.
Unfortunately many people seem to need a religion.
If it is for serving their need to have a social net, a fear mechanism, or if it is the only thing keeping them from going on a homocidal drug fueled rampage(as some of their questions indicate) I don't know.
As far as anybody can tell religion has always been here and likely always will be, at least to some degree, as long as humans are humans.

Some people use and need religion as a source of guidance. Some people are perfectly fine without religion. It depends on the person involved as everybody is different from one another.

No. Is the quick answer. What use do we have for religion? Most people are essentially good and we have laws these days to controll those who mean us harm. I'd love it if humankind woke up to the fact that we only get one chance at life and lived for now and not for some imagined afterlife.
