Many years before I heard of Scientology, I lived near a church for Christian Scientists. Are these two in any way related?

Scientology is the "religion" developed by L. Ron Hubbard which uses Dianetics and has Tom Cruise as a famous follower.

Christian Science is a religion based on Mary Baker Eddy's interpretation of the Bible regarding spiritual healing. They are not related in any way.

They are not but their names are so close its hard to know. Scientology is not a Christians denomination. They believe in a higher power that is actually from another planet (which is not as far-fetched as most deities). Christian Scientists believe that all they need to know is in the Bible (I'm not kidding). Christian Scientists will not go to the doctor or take their children to a doctor, or school. They are not like the Amish, who believe that the trappings of modern society are sin, they actually just think its bad to listen to scientists. Christian Scientists usually have electrcity and the like but there are horror stories of children dying on the dinner table while their siblings eat breakfast around them (this is probably either one nut once or a made-up story though).

Not even close. Christian Science is a Christian denomination. Scientology has nothing to do with Christianity. Scientology is a business pretending to be a religious philosophy.

Scientology is a body of teachings and related techniques developed by American science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard. It began in 1952 as a self-help philosophy, an outgrowth of his earlier self-help system, Dianetics, and was later described as a new religion. It is said to offer "an exact methodology" to help humans achieve awareness of their spiritual existence across many lifetimes and, simultaneously, to become more effective in the physical world. The name "Scientology" is also used to refer to the often controversial Church of Scientology, the largest organization promoting the practice of Scientology, which is itself part of a network of affiliated organizations that claim ownership and sole authority to disseminate Dianetics and Scientology.

A stated goal of Scientology is to rehabilitate the thetan (roughly equivalent to the soul) to regain its native state of "total freedom." Church spokespeople and practitioners say that Hubbard's teachings (called "Technology" or "Tech" in Scientology terminology) have saved them from many problems and enabled them to better realize their potential in business and in their personal lives.[1][2] However, outside observers—including journalists, lawmakers, and national governing bodies of several countries—have alleged that the Church is an unscrupulous commercial enterprise that harasses its critics and brutally exploits its members.[3][4]

Although Scientologists are usually free to practice their beliefs, the organized church has often encountered opposition. While a number of governments now view the Church as a religious organization entitled to the protections and tax relief that such status brings, others view it as a pseudoreligion, a cult, or a transnational corporation.

Christian Science is a religious teaching regarding the efficacy of spiritual healing according to the interpretation of the Bible by Mary Baker Eddy, in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (First published in 1875). Students of Christian Science are usually, though not always or necessarily, members of the Church of Christ, Scientist.

"Christian Science is sometimes confused with Scientology, an unrelated organization founded about 75 years after Christian Science."

I think Scientologists do not believe in Christ as savior, and they have a completely different belief on how we came to this earth.
