Many people cannot deal with the awful things that accompany a cold or flu so they buy products to help with the symptoms. It doesn't make the cold or flu go away faster but makes them more comfortable. Like cough syrup quieting a cough so they can get a couple hours of sleep with out waking up to cough every 10 minutes.

Because they have reasons such as a job and can't miss too many days or school and just want to feel better as fast as possible.

To help them get over, or tolerate their symptoms. It won't cure the virus, but will help you to feel better.
