It was good that it featured a lot of the real participants, not just narration and computer animation.
And as for being the best army, do note the decisions and attitudes of some of the other branches of the military that Clarkson dug out of the files.
And the aversion to creating units of "gladiators" (the term in use at the time!) was quite reasonable.
Many of the privates in the commando/paratrooper units would have made corporals or sergeants in their regular units, and that loss was felt quite sharply. An elite trooper or a great squad leader... which is more valuable?
But the raid itself? Magnificent.

Saw a few minutes of at the end of Clarkson's BBC2 prog on WW2 Commandos.
One small point I'd like to make. At the end or near the end of the episode I saw, Clarkson told us that after the raid [the one we were shown] Adolf Hitler ordered that all Allied Commandos be shot. He did no such thing. Adolf Hitler ordered that all captured Commandos be tortured to death.
A great many Commandos were indeed tortured to death by the SS and Gestapo. In 1946 the SAS were sent on a mission to Germany to round up former members of the SS and Gestapo and kill them.
I know about this because my dad was one of those SAS men. They even managed to find the SS sergeant who had been responsible for putting Odette Churchill [MI6 00-Agent] into the gas ovens at Belsen. He was shot in the guts and took six hours to die while being driven around in a closed lorry.

yes i'm watching it and these are the real hero's not the one's who come first in a poxy race or jog 26 miles for a few quid

How can you judge just seeing a program about one special unit ?
