This is best answered in the answer to the question, Did Jesus Christ exist? How ? Simply; since the Jews were given the responsibility by God ( see: Acts, 7th chapter, verse 38 & Romans, 3rd chapter, verse 2 ), to record and transfer throughout the generations the written record of God's will for then ( Old Testament or Covenant ), that includes, Laws, Prophesies of the birth of the Messiah, His murder, His resurrection, and the ultimate establishment of His Kingdom on the earth at His return. Now; the question arises: How does one know if the written record forwarded are credible? Well; the prophesy of the Messiah, Jesus Christ was provided ( Dan 9th Chapter) His murder ( see: Book of Isaiah and the Psalms ) - to name a few. This was later, proven true, as the historical record supports the personage of Jesus Christ, as depicted by the Roman historians, Jewish [Josephus], and the early church historians. Since the accurancy of this writtem account proved true in its out come after thousands of years, there is little doubt of the Jew's credibility of the past record concerning Moses - especially, since their fore fathers were Moses' subjects. Remember; all scripture is wriiten under the inspiration of the Holy spirit and not a man-made conception. ( Second Book of Peter, 1st chapter, verse 20). Therefore, the conclusive answer to your question posed is, it is a matter of faith in God and "faith" is a gift imparted to Christians trough the Holy spirit. ( see: Galatians, 5th chapter, verse 22 ).

Well, I have read that the jews must have had a powerful leader, preferably religious (not political) when they left Egypt. Otherwise they would have probably all gone in different directions
