Samples of arterial and mixed venous blood were obtained from a human subject and their oxygen consumption was measured at the same time. The amount of oxygen in the arterial blood was 19.5 ml per deciliter and that in the mixed venous blood was 14.9 ml per deciliter. If the total O2 consumption was 265 ml .min-1, what was the subjects cardiac output? answer is in Litres per minute please.

Well they were consumed oxygen in the blood = 4.6mL/dL (19.5-14.9), or 46mL/L.

If they seeing as they're using 265mL/min of oxygen; they must need 5.7L/min of blood. (265mL.min-1 / 46/mL/L).

So the cardiac output is 5.7L/min.
