I'm thinking ok getting a pet duck but I have to convince my parents about it...please tell me everything you know about ducks and keeping them as pets. I'm looking for helpful tips, feeding needs, best types of ducks, how long they live, how long they can be left alone, etc. Please tell me anything there is for me to know so I can convince my parents, thanks!!

I grew up on a farm and we had ducks and a pond they are not easy to take care of as pets. They need lots of care and attention. Also ducks don't like to be just "one" I do not recommend a duck as a pet. I am sorry I know that is not the answer that you want. Why don't you start out with some Finches or a Canaries because they require minimal interaction and are easy to care for. It is better to get 2 and not just one because birds are social creatures and they like to have company.

I had pet ducks. Yes they can be messy but they are so cute. They are not a long term animal to keep unless you live on a farm with a lake and lots of room to fly. But helping them grow up is fun. You can get a cage like a rabbit might have and line the bottom with newspaper. Put a large doggie water bowl in it and get some duck food. They sell the grain probably where you would buy the duck. Once the duck gets larger it will grow it's adult feathers and pretty soon it's time to say good bye. The cage and water should be cahnged daily the water sooner if it gets gross but it's not a huge problem and it's not expensive aside from the cage. Make sure the cage has a drawer underneath were you put the paper so the droppings fall in and the duck doesn't walk in it.

You will need to keep the baby duck under a heat lamp like a reading lamp with a 100 watt light bulb. Keep it in a warm room in something like a fish tank or a safe crate . Baby ducks need attention they get loud sometimes if left alone too long. They need feed from feed store. You will have to clean up there crate or tank daily. If you are lucky enough to have an outside barn like structure you could use that, but again make sure you have a heat lamp. You can get a duck fairly easy and they only cost a couple dollars so the cost can be negligible if you use what you have around and improvise.
