You are only allowed to take 20kg as this is what the airlines use to work out the weight of the aircraft. This way they can then work out how much cargo can be carried also in ratio to fuel.

You want enough fuel for the flight and not be to heavy that you can't take off.

If you want to take more then you will have to pay an excess baggage fee which pays for the extra fuel.

So in reality it's not nonsense but make perfect sense!

the total including your bag is 20kg. Check your return flight details also as some airlines restrict further on return flights. Most airlines allow hand luggage now and as long as you have nothing dangerous in there you can carry an extra 5-10kg dependent on which airline. MAke sure you keep to a small hand luggage bag, from experience I pack clothes in my hand luggage because you can fit alot more into a smaller space than with most other holiday allowances. In recent years airlines have been generous with allowances at check in but that is not always the case these days as everyone is out to make extra money. Most airports have an early check in for your baggage these days its worth checking out as you may be able to take your baggage the day before and if you find it is considerably overweight then you will be able to do more about it than if you were checking into your flight with hours to spare.

UK domestic flights have been 20Kg limit for a long time - hence I always drive or take the train to get to Gatwick!!

It used to be 32Kg for international flights, but this has just been reduced. I could never keep to 20Kg before now, and know I won't ever again because now I travel with a baby, and have to get her stuff and mine into 1 suitcase!

C'mon airlines, you're having a laugh, if it's because of health and safety (and I suspect it is), why oh why have you not got all the travelling of the bags from checkin to the aircraft mechanised. Surely there is no need for someone to manhandle every case?!!!!

I am female, and went on holiday in the summer for 2 weeks. My luggage allowance was also 20kgs and that was plenty. My case only topped the scales at 16/17, and no, I don't travel light.

thats plenty of weight. You get my job and try lifting all those bags into the cargo bin. You can bring more if you have to, you just have to pay for it. Plus you're allowed 2 bags at 20 kg each. You don't need your luggage to weigh as much as you.

That's 44 lbs a bag. Aren't you allowed 2 bags?
If so 88 lbs is enough. I just upgraded my luggage to light weight luggage. My suitcase (travel pro) weight almost 20 lbs. They lowered the weight here in the US to 50 lbs per case. It's not right but they are doing it. In US if you are over weight they charge you.
Use smaller suitcases (that weight less) and roll your clothes fit more in.

Good Luck, I feel your pain, I like to pack a lot too.

20kgs is sufficient. If you insist on taking more, you'll have to pay. Try sending it by Fedex and see what you'd have to pay. American flights still accept 2 bags with an increased weight allowance. If you feel the need to take all your stuff with you, go to America on an American airline.

I'd love to know who comes up with these ridiculous rules myself.
The rule for most airlines is 20kg luggage with 7kg for hand luggage. And I know from doing lots of lifting and carrying that isn't much.
