Most street drugs have been legal at some point in time. Cocaine and heroin were both legal in the past and used for medicinal purposes. Years of study has shown that their addictive nature and side effects aren't worth their so-called benefits. Therefore, they've been outlawed.
Lots of drugs that are originally approved by the FDA end up getting banned also. Its because it takes time before you really see the effects of medication. Even if no problems appear early in the study, they can always show up as a side effect of long-term use.
*Edit -- as for the answerer who compared other drugs to alcohol and cigarettes and insinuating that they are all equally bad for you ... you've obviously never seen someone strung out on crack, meth, or heroin.

I really don't know what this has to do with Religion and Spirituality. Street or recreational drugs are not legal due to the lack of benefit, the HIGHLY addictive nature and the amount of damage done by the drug on the body. It is an interesting philosophical debate actually. The reasoning comes down to governments saying "these things are too dangerous for you, so we will prevent you from doing them". I'm sure you can see the obvious objections and "well what about this case" scenario's.
In the interest of making money and safety, it would be wiser to legalize and control all street/recreational drugs. Known dosages, ingredients (purity), etc would prevent a lot problems for users ie, someone overdosing or dieing from cross reaction with drugs that are too pure or cut with something that can't mix with something else.
Also, if things were available legally and controlled by the government the tax money would be a great profit. Also, the money to fight the "war on drugs" would be less if the sales were controlled like alcohol and tobacco.

Good point. If caffeine had only just been discovered then it would almost certainly be illegal & i belive the same goes for alcohol & ciggerettes as after all all 3 of those are a drug. I don't belive there is such a thing as a good or a bad drug i think it is the relationship you have with them that determines what is good & what is bad, alcohol & ciggerettes are equally as harmful as any other illegal substance but government will never ban them because they make too much money from tax.

Threre are many reasons street drugs aren't legal. First, the feds can't tax them. Secondly, there is no one to regulate the purity of them. Third, people like to decide what is good for other people. Fourth, the "war on drugs" aside from being a waste of time and money is a huge money making scam. Fifth, it provides a reason to hire more police. Sixth, it puts people in prison, which is another hugely profitable business.
The list goes on.

I agree wtih Kevin, I think the reason why drugs traded on teh street is illegal is b/c the gov't can't keep a record of them. since they aren't taxed, they are not "valid" drugs in the eyes of the gov't and law dept and police. they are not valid to be taken because they are not prescribed by a person or a firm taht is monitored by the govt or has a pharameceutical liscense. thus it's legal.

This is my second opportunity today to state that I'm a libertarian.
Make it legal, regulate it and tax the you-know-what out of it.

because some of these drugs, even when not overdosed, can kill you. also, these "street" drugs do not have any medical purpose, what would be the point of selling them?
