Hello, I have a Japanese fiance and we are trying to set a date for marriage sometime this year. I have looked all over the internet and I am just confused. I have heard many different things. I just want to know what it takes to get married, and then live in Japan for a couple of years for work. After 2 years or so I want to return to the US and go back to school. If anyone could shed some light on what I need, and where I need to go to get what I need, I would truly be grateful! Thank you...

In response to the person above, not all foreigners want to become US citizens. And I think its unfair to say that. I'm American and married a Brit, and now I live in the UK, and we're very happy.

You will have to fill out all sorts of visa paperwork. Then if you both decide to move back to the states, you'll have to fill out even more paperwork for your fiance. It sounds a bit overwhelming, but its not so bad. If you contact the American Embassy in Japan (there's probably a few, I don't know what city you're moving to), they should be able to help.

Your best bet would be first to contact an attorney specializing in immigration law, since it sounds like you want to marry in Japan and then return to the U.S., because your marriage might not be valid when you come back to the States.

I would contact a lawyer and ask him what the best route is you guys. My uncle married a Japanese woman and brought her son over here a few years ago. I would ask him but we are not very close with they live quite a ways away. Good luck

To get married in the USA fiance would have to get a fiance permit to enter the USA and get married, see the INS.
