My daughter is 17 months old and I have a 1 week old. We taught her "ahhh" as in ahhh baby, be easy with the baby. She understands this and will say "ahhh" and gently rub his head. She also likes to go up to him, wave at him in his face and say "HI!" in a very high pitched voice. Although she is careful around him, she doesn't understand her own strength and I always watch her wtih him. I think that she will do fine with him as being as young as she is, she probably will never remember NOT having a baby brother.

My cousin has a 4 year old and just had a newborn. Although the 4 year old was jealous and did fight back with fits for the first week or so, she's now 'mommy's helper' and watches out for him completely. I think it's a matter of time and adjustment for any age. I have 2 stepchildren who didn't 'get' the whole baby thing. It was just an annoyance. They were 10 and 15. Now with my second it was exciting for them. It has to do with not knowing what 'their' place is once this new, always talked about baby is there.

My daughter was 2 yrs old when my second daughter was born. Her reaction was excitement to finally see her sister. She was great with her little sister. We never had any problems. She helped bathe her, change nappies and loved holding her. She was never jealous or upset.
